Bad Idle In Reverse?

I get into my Van start it up, no problem. Then I shift it into reverse and the whole Van starts shaking and acting like it wants to turn itself off!

I put it in drive or park and the Idle goes back to normal! Please keep in mind I haven't left the driveway yet.

Any ideas?

If it backs up like you have a heavy load, it may be the torque convertor. something about flow of fluid in it that causes problem only in rev. Get more info from an auto tranny expert before u jump to conclusions tho.

Sounds like you are having pressure control issues within the transmission.

The manual shift lever connection(internal) wears over time causing the shift lever to be out of position. This can cause strange pressure issues such as you describe.

Also, the shift cable (from shifter to transmission) is a critical adjustment. If the cable is out of adjustment it can also cause this kind of problem. I would first suggest re-adjusting the cable. The process is quick and fairly easy to do. Any of the repair manuals (Haynes, Chilton, Ford) will provide the details on this. You could also check the repair section on AutoZone. They may also have information on the adjustment.
