Finally got time to install new ABS sensor on rear diff. Lite has been on since about last july. First it was the front ABS. Paid a lil over 100.00 for front. Then about one month went by came on again. Went and had it checked out was rear abs. So i just rode it thru the winter. about a month ago i changed the rear diff grease. Wasnt full of metal but was quit dirty. Had my parts guy price the rear abs. kept telling me its over a hundred. Well they was wrong. They kept ordering the pice but kept ordering the wrong piece. Finally yday i got the right abs sensor...from ford it was $28.91. Just wanted to say that i finally got my "black beast" fixed.
Did you ABS come on or stay on all the time. My light comes on as soon as the motor starts and never turns off. I thought it would go out until you started driving if the sensor were bad.
When you started the explorer it came on with iginition. Never did go off. The 4x4 high flashed sometimes maybe 8 times then went off. But the ABS stayed on from time of igintion until you tured the motor off. I changed the diff oil once then put new in ran it for about 2 weeks. about 250miles? then changed it again when i put the new sensor back in.
Some Fords source the vehicle speed from one or more ABS wheel speed sensors. Since you don't mention the model year of your vehicle I don't know if yours is one of them, but based on your description of the problem it seems likely.
Id check the abs sensors on all 4 wheels. I dont rember if they are on all 4 wheels. Ill have to look at my dads tomorrow. Hes got a 2002 F250. Some tiems you can take them out and clean them and install and it fix problem.
If your truck just has rear ABS, you will not have sensors at all four wheels. You will only have one sensor which is located at the rear differential input.
According to the 2000 Factory Service Manual, the Vehicle Speed Sensor is part of the ABS system, even if you just have rear ABS. At least on the Explorers the rear wheel speed sensor is a common part to fail. It's probably a similar situation on your F-250, and the problem is likely the wheel speed sensor.
