Well last fall around october my ABS lite came on and my 4x4 like comes on flashes so manny times and goes off. I took it to a friend of mine that is a mechanic and had him to read the computer and tell me what it says. Well it first said that the right front abs sensor was bad. I ordered the whole hub assembly and installed it. It went off for about 2 trips around town. Took it back to him now then it said the rear abs was bad. Breaks was about 1/2 gone. Ran it thru winter and just mannually put it in 4x4 everytime i need it. B/c it wont kick in auto 4x4 b/c of the abs. I already knew that. Well i ordered new rotors and pads about feburary. I run a towing company and do minor auto and complete tractor tailer grarge work. Just now had time to put pads and rotors on my explorer. ABS went off for about 10 mins. Now its back on. Hoping to just change fluid in rear diff mabye it has some dirt or something in it making the abs like come on for the rear? If not guess i gotta buy the abs sensor. anyone know what the code is saying when the 4x4 flashes on and off?
What year is your Explorer? On several model years the rear ABS sensor is a common source of an ABS light. Lining thickness of the brake pads or shoes should have no impact on the ABS light in your Explorer. Likewise, if the rear differential fluid is dirty enough to cause an ABS light you'd likely need to carefully clean the tone ring and replace the destroyed differential gears rather than just changing the fluid. I think it would take a lot of metallic particles in the fluid to cause the ABS light to come on due to bad fluid.
its a 2004. I have to order the rear abs sensor its around 100 bucks at a auto parts store i deal with. Im hoping its just the sensor. Thats alot cheaper than the whole rear diff. Just changing the fluid to make sure that its not a rear diff going out. Plus it wouldnt hurt to change it anways. And also it feels like its got air in the brakes. when mash it...it sorta pushes back like air. But i think its just where the abs is messed up
If your 2004 just has ABS, there will be a single rear wheel speed sensor like in the earlier generation of Explorers. However, if your Explorer has stability assist/RSC, each rear wheel will have its own tone ring and ABS wheel speed sensor.
my 2002 had light on a few years ago. new rear axle gear lube and clean-- stayed off for 6 months. cleaned again, stayed off for 2 months. they 1 month... thought maybe the sensor was weak.. bought new and installed sensor-- no light for over a year
My sister has a 2003 Explorer XLT and her ABS light has been glowing for well over six months. It has the optional AdvanceTrac (traction control + electronic stability control), so that means it has a Speed Sensor and Sensor Ring on both rear wheels?
The rear speed sensors list for $115.70 and sensor rings for $29.31, just to confirm that I'm looking the correct parts, does that look/sound correct? I know I can find the parts from other sites for nearly half the price, but I'm just wanting to be sure I'm understanding what components I need first...then I'll bargain shop!
I'd appreciate any input or suggestions on the matter! Any advice on where I can find the parts at the lowest price once I do confirm they're what I need???
i would just crawl under and look for sensor location. my 2002 has the centr pickup and it was maybe $40. you dont need a steel ring with teeth, what can go wrong with that?
The tone rings are actually rather brittle and can crack. If they crack between "teeth" the ABS module will pick this up as an inconsistent signal and trigger the ABS light. About the only way to diagnose this is to pull the diagnostic codes, carefully visually inspect the tone ring, and/or monitor the signal from the tone ring with an oscilloscope, looking for a longer than typical valley in the square wave.
