Well, finally got the Mr. Gasket gasket in the mail. Took long enough. Figured it'd only be a day or two since the company is in California (and I'm in Idaho), but it turns out their warehouse was in Georgia.
Been waiting to install it since I got my intake fixed and welded. The guy also widened that trouble tab while he was in there, and then planed the intake. $65 all said and done. The widened tab really made a difference when installing.
He did quality work at welding it:
I'd definitely recommend the Mr. Gasket 260 over the generic Felpro one most auto parts stores have in stock, and over the Clifford one, which gave out and broke my intake. It's thick and seems to be of really nice quality. I liked it.
This time, I decided to get some new washers, instead of using the 30 year old thick springed steel ones that were on there stock. Coupled those with some high strength split washers, and it seemed to really press the intake/exhaust on there nice and tight. 25ft/lbs per bolt.
It still seems to want to buck and kick though. I sprayed all around the intake and carb with carb cleaner and it didn't seem to make any difference. Seems the intake is all nice and sealed and we're off to find another cause of the idle issues. The exhaust is still popping, the vacuum needle bounces between 18 and 19 when it's idling, and I can feel and hear a slight buck when sitting in the cab. Not sure what it is, but maybe I can now rule out an intake leak.
However, seems to have helped quite a bit in other areas since it doesn't bog off the idle quite like it did.
good news there AB maybe a vacuum leak some where else? no bog off idle is good... no help really to your issue at hand but thanks for your post and insight here. did ya work on the Y pipe while it was apart?
hope by months end my F250 is back on the road here
Wasn't able to get to the Y-pipe unfortunately. Didn't have the tools for it or the money at the moment. Fortunately, I looked inside and mine wasn't as bad as some of the pictures I've seen.
I'll definitely have to try the EFI plugs. I've been meaning to but never have. Regular Motorcraft, or another type?

motorcraft, or autolight. don't waste money on platnums, they missfire and pop.my buddie used the y pipe, was very expensive, and cracked 6 months after he put it on, I welded it, and 6 mths later it cracked again. he went to a muffler shop, and had one made up out of heavier guage tube, and it wound up costing the same.
There is a bit on the Pony Carbs site that tells how to read and interpret a v. gauge. I found it helpful.
BTW, finally got your photo out to the mag. It took me quite a while to get it into a jpeg. But my advanced highly advanced computer skills did pay off.
I've checked out that vacuum diagnostics several times and nothing seems to match the symptoms I have. I'm thinking this weekend I'll take a video of the vacuum needle / sound clip of the exhaust pipe to see what people think. It's frustrating.
Thanks for submitting my picture. That will be fun to look forward to if it's used.
Article was defiantly not in the last BD, I got all issues but 1,2, (and I may or may not have) 3. Must be in the sister publication - is it "True Blue Trucks". Is it the month of June issue?
Thanks
Even though it has nothing to do with my intake, I think I finally solved the mystery.
Took my distributor cap off to check my cap and rotor, and the distributor shaft has about 1/8" or more of play in it. I imagine when it's spinning around and isn't always pointing in the right direction, it's going to miss and buck.
Haven't replaced it yet, but I'm going to take a wild guess that that's the issue.
Note to anyone who has all the symptoms of an intake leak (because they're pretty text book symptoms), but your manifold vacuum is top notch, check the distributor.
AB--I don't know if this will help, but I would say to buy a good new dizzy. With my 390 I always went with the rebuilts, and they would last about 2 years before the same prob would reoccur.
