I wanted to get whips for my truck.. Are they easy to install.. i figured it'd be a waste to use them just for looks? Whats a good size to get in your opinion?
Thanks!
Where you gonna mount them? The hardest part is wiring the CB.Not sure if you have a local Truckstop or CB store, but they would be a good source for parts. If you don't have a toolbox in the bed,you could use angle brackets in the corner of the bed.Or you can make something up to mount it on the front bed panel. If you have a toolbox in the bed,you could use L-Brackets to mount it to the toolbox.Alot of CB shops carry everything you need to mount the antennas.Another thing you gotta think of is if you want the co-ax to be visible or hidden? Some people run it under the dash and then under the door sill plates, and then to the back of the cab.Others run it directly under the floor mat or carpet to the back of the cab.It can be done either way. There should be a floor plug in the back of the cab that you can slip the coax through. Then you can simply bring the coax up between the cab and bed and to the Antenna Mount.Good luck on it.
heres how i did mine. the antennas came with mirror mounts. ran it in threw the bed plugs and then threw the cab vents. ran it up under the carpet on both sides and into the CB.
(yes i had the antenna mounted on the base wrong)
i had some 4ft. fiberglass antenas and they worked pretty good. had a pretty good range. my buddy had a 18ft. whipper on his old truck and everytime we went to sonic or drove under an underpass it hit, but it was really powerfull and had a long range
The bed mounts are about as good as you will get.
Electrically/operationally, they are no better than a single because you can't get them far enough apart to get any gain from them. A quarter wave spacing min is 8 feet. On a vehichle they only work as one would.
The way they are matched to the radio is by the cable length to get them to match for SWR.
The guy with an 18 foot antenna is 5 foot over the legal limit for height in most states and is a stoppable offense if an officer want to do so.
