Hello, I was wondering I'm going to be getting a CB it's the Midland 75-822 and I'm not looking to put huge whips or drill a bunch of holes in my truck, I know they make the kind that connect through the window, but as I'm looking I see that most are up to 50w is that enough to get pretty good reception, thanks Josh
50w is illegal, Max legal on CB band in the US is 4w tho some can be tuned for a bit more and then there are amps to boost but again, not really legal. So, an antenna rated to 50w is overkill for the CB power wise, that extra ability is for SSB and powered systems.
Wattage is for sending. For receiving you need to tune your antenna. Use a SWR meter and tune whatever antenna but remember to trim in small increments.

Agree. A poorly tuned CB will get you the reception of a phone booth, a properly tuned antennae will have decent range to it, using a SWR meeter makes all the difference to getting the most from your CB

Steer clear of glass mounts. I mounted mine on my toolbox. This is the second pickup I've done this. I have a 4 foot firestik. I run a ground wire from the one of the mounting bolts down to the frame. I also run a longer length of coax.
Both of those lowered the SWR. It is all moot, there is hardly any traffic on the CB anymore.
