best automatic transmission for f150 302 debate

i have a 95 f150 302 and im having all kinds of tranny issues. im not sure which trans is in it but the problem is the truck will be driving and shifting just fine and then out of the blue it will drop into to neutral or shift down to second or first even. it does this at any speed whether its uphill down hill whatever. i took it to a friend of a friends private garage and he changed the fluid and filter and he replaced a spring in it that he said was broken in 4 places but it still does this and its getting worse,so im planning on putting a new used tranny in it this summer and i wanna know what all yalls opinions are on what the best tranny is. anything special i need to know or swap? ill crawl under and find which trans i have soon enough. thanks guys

The transmission in your truck is computer controlled and there is likely nothing wrong with it, the problem you describe is common when there is a sensor problem and the first thing that needs to be done to track down that problem is to pull the codes.

Would taking it to advance or autozone be a good idea to pull these codes?

No not at all they're idiots, either flash them on the check engine light or go get yourself a code reader, the Equus 3145 is what you need. Amazon.com: Equus 3145 Ford Digital Code Reader: Automotive

Code definitions and the procedure to do a test without a code reader are here. Ford Fuel Injection

The readers digest version of the selftest is find the EEC test harness on the drivers inner fender and put a jumper between STI and Sig_Rtn wires. Then turn the key to run and be prepared to count flashes on the check engine light.

By the way you should have a 4R70W transmission just for your information.
It would be code "U" on the drivers door post.

You being from Canada, how often do you deal with people from AutoZone? Cause that's where we order parts for our shop all the time, and I dunno about other stores but the guys we work with actually do know their stuff... Just sayin, ya know.

I had this same problem with my 95 f150 4x4 with a 302 after getting a new battery and new ground cables and when I drove it the transmission started shifting at random after doing some research and a thorough look over my grounds did not have a good connection to the body when I cleaned them the transmission began shifting better than when I got it

I'd agree that many, not all, good parts can be found at the auto parts stores but, really, they're all idiots. Every time I go in there with a part or an issue that might be on the edge of their knowledge, they disappoint me in spectacular fashion. Heck, there is one guy there (I cringe when I see him), he used to work across the street @ OfficeDepot.
