Well I finally went for it and lubed my front wheel bearings on my 03 f 250 4x4. Everrything went better than expected except for when I grabbed my sensor with just my fingers, gave it a twist and snap! The outer tube around the winding of copper broke off inside the hub. Anyway put everthing back last night because I need the truck, of course the abs light is on.
The question I have is to see if anyone has a trick to remove the sensor so I don't break the other side tonight. Any tips would be appreciated, thanks.
Try an easy out mazz!! Or splitting the plastic part and then using and easy out, Or a pick. Maybe a drill bit and a screw? Maybe more beer and a hammer....LOL
HAHAHAHA, im sorry, this is just funny because i did the EXACT same thing.
I was doing ball joints and decided to just replace the whole hub complete with new sensor since i had the hub off anyway, and it looked like it was in rough shape. Good luck getting that piece of plastic out. Maybe you could carefully drill it out? Might be easier if you remove the hub and put it on a bench though... you don't want to get filings into the bearings.
there is a small amount of metal in the end of sensor that breaks off i had it happen to me just use a small magnet pulls it right out good luck need like a mechanics magnet pen style
Any update on how you got it out?
I went to replace the rear sensor and found that it (the cap) had previously been broken off and I was curious as to if an easy out worked or any aforementioned technique.
Thanks in advance
Happened to me too, what i did was take a flat head screwdriver the size of the abs sensor hole, and push it into the top of the plastic part stuck inside. i lightly twisted back and forth til i could break it free and spin it, then i used a pick to pull it straight up
That sounds like a plan. I forgot about the opening in the cap until after I posted. I could possibly be able to just pull it out from that too. I'm going to do it tomorrow and I'll keep your suggestion in mind!
Thank you for the reply,
Louis
Thanks acf6!
I'm doing it on the ground, because the overhead door broke a spring and I'm waiting for them to get here to fix it.
I was on my back, on the ground and the picks kept slipping, but I was able to get the old O-ring with them. I used a large screwdriver to pry the 'cap' portion out. The hardest part of it was holding something there as a fulcrum since I was limited on space to move my body while not on a lift.
Took 5 minutes. Again, thank you for the idea!
No problem, hope it helps you guys. I don't want to grease my wheel bearings now after replacing the one sensor because they are expensive!! I got an oem motorcraft one from amazon for $124
