I got a code from my ABS light that the right front ABS sensor was bad in my 97 4WD expy. NAPA said the sensor was not replaceable - you had to replace the entire hub, which was $330. I found a hub with the sensor on Epay for 99. Is this a tough job? I called Ford and they said you can replace the sensor - $127. What gives?
It takes two minutes to remove it, only one, very small bolt holds it to the hub and I believe it is a hex head drive you need to remove it. Just remove it, clean up the area around the hole and slide the new one in and hook it up to the harness. You might need some solvent to remove rust on the bolt if there is any, and then some anti-sieze on the bolt when you replace it. I removed both of my front sensors as part of a lower ball joint replacement that I did (removing the hub entirely). The sensor is easy to replace; Napa gave you poor advice.
Thanks guys. I went to that Rockauto website and teh one I need is 124 and change. The second one from the bottom was for 2WD. Still cheaper and easier than the NAPA guy tried to soak me for.
my abs light is on on my 1997 expedition and i took the right front tire off then the cover on top of the sensor then the sensor and cleaned it just to see if this was the problem... it was all full of dirt and grease and all.... i tried to clean as good as i could, i could not afford the new one right now as i also had to buy the studs and brake pads and the disc. for both sides. i put everything together again and did what i heard was disconnect the battery while key is one step back from starting vehicle for 15 min... just about to go outside and check to see if good luck does exist!
no luck at all.... well i just came back and the light is still there... it did not go away....

sorry... i meant the left driver side front tire.... i took it to kennedy's for tires here in imperial ca and the guys there did not give me the code, but told me the reader said it was that sensor on that tire( for free!) i bought some tires there for my wife's quest.....well, i cleaned it and did not fix the problem.. i actually went to a junk yard, and the guys said those sensors are extremely hard to go bad. that it is usually the one in the back by the diff. so i got a used sensor went back put it on and wala! light went off.
thanks to all that post their comments and all their poss solutions. also if anyone know the code for that left front tire sensor going bad... please post!
