Well I got a hold of a 2002 F-250 and it has the shift on the fly 4-wheel drive system with auto locking front hubs.
It also has manual locking front hubs as well.
Can anyone tell me why it would have both?
Did Ford just have left over parts?
I'm confused.
What do you mean by both? Is one hub Auto/Lock and another Free/Lock or are they both Auto/Lock? Both should be Auto/Lock if the PO didn't take 'em out and replace them with manual hubs (common method for "fixing" the auto hubs).
The lock is a fail safe mechanism put in place for when the vacuum system fails to engage the hubs. You can get out, switch 'em to lock and then flip the switch in the cab. Lots or threads on this topic.

That must be what it is.
Ford says that the shift on the fly is auto locking but there are manual locking hubs on the front wheels.
I guess I should of done a search on this first.
Sorry about that.
Its good to have both as I learned a few days ago. I was out four wheeling climbing a huge hill when all of a sudden the front end was no longer pulling. I had my son get out and lock in manually. For some reason I lost vacuum.
Thanks for the info guys, my 97 F-150 has the same shift on the fly system but with no manual locking hubs on the front wheels so I just wasn't sure what they were for.
It makes sence to me now and it is good to have both.

All trucks with manual 4wd have manual (free/lock) hubs. All trucks with electronic 4wd have auto hubs unless the owner popped a set of manual hubs in it because the auto hubs either broke or they have a vacuum leak they don't want to chase down.
