Is there a way to release the driver side tailgate latch on a 2007 Ford Ranger without using the access panel on the inside of the tailgate? I have a tonneau cover which can't be folded back until the tailgate is open. Is there a way to insert a shim or screwdriver into the latch from outside to release the clip? I suspect the plastic clip attached to the latch rod on the drivers side has broken. Passenger side releases.
Is the latch broke or is just one side stuck. My latch on my handle on my 03 broke on one side and I was able to use a screw driver to move the mechanism for that side from the handle area of the gate.
It's not at the handle, it's the driver side of the tailgate at the striker plate (?); the passenger side will release (I can hear the click and the gate comes out slightly, clicks back in when you push on the tailgate). I tried to see if I could slide a screwdriver or knife blade down between the side of the tailgate and the bed but can't see an obvious route to get at the mechanism to unlatch it.
