So my brother and I have been putting our 5.8 windsor back in our 89 F250. We spent the afternoon hooking up the last few things and fine filled all the fluids to start the truck. After a few times of cranking it over, the line leaving the fuel pump blew off during cranking. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas why it would do this, other than just a bad connector. ( this could still be it since at this point I gave up for the night) Thanks for any ideas.
the connector on the exit of the fuel pump. gas came rushing out. so the fuel pump is definately working. I am wondering if maybe the lines or the fuel filter could be clogged and cause this?
its one of the quick connects. the hose is real short between the pump and the fuel filter so it should be a big deal to replace. I hope that its just a bad connector
Could also be a bad fuel pressure regulator (FPR).
If the FPR does not come off it seat or the return line to the tanks is pinched shut/plugged the pressure can go over 100 PSI and blow a hose off.
its a black clip and the connector to the fuel filter is a white clip so I will make sure I check that when i get the replacement hose. I am thinking that the return line, like subford said might be pinched. Thanks for all the input guys.
This may be a no-no, but the best I could suggest is to pull the return line from the FPR, then shoot compressed air thru it. If you can hear it entering the tank then it's probably not clogged, or the compressed air cleared the clog or is powerful enough to get thru it, whereas returning fuel is not.
Others may need to chime in on this tho- don't act until they do.

If you had a black clip on the pump side and a white one on the filter side, the pump clip is wrong - the fuel lines are 5/16" and require a white clip on both ends. I don't think an all new hose will be needed, just a new clip should suffice unless the connector it slides through got all busted by the old clip letting go. The fuel system has around 40 psi pressure in it even with the return lines free to flow back to the tank, which is enough to blow the hose off a steel line if the clip used is too large.
ok great well since I just put the lines back on. I'm going to try and replace the clip on the line. if it blows the new clip off. then I'm going to try and run come compressed air threw the lines to check them. Thanks for all the help.
