FYI I've seen a "upgraded" HPOP screen with a tear in it.

Does anyone know the size of the crows foot needed to torque the fitting? Need to find one before I tear into this thing!

Hi, not meaning to hijack this thread but I have a question about this. My truck died this wkend and is at a dealership 200 miles away. They called me this morning and diagnosed it was a STC fitting part# 4C3Z-9B246-F. She told me it was a $40 part but the bad news was they would have to pull the cab to put it in. Does this sound right? 8 hours of labor plus the part and was quoted about $1200. Did not sound right to me at all and from what I have read on here no one has mentioned pulling the cab off to get at this part. I have not given them the OK to do this yet as I wanted some different opinions first. What is your conclusions on this as they need an answer by tomorrow if I want the truck done by this wkend so I can pick it up. Or should I trailer it back home and have another dealership work on it? Thanks

If it is only the STC fitting on the HPOP, there is no need for cab removal. As to the charge, it is excessive IMO, but I do not know the book time for the job. If they address other weak places prone to a HPO leak, it may be more reasonable.

Most of the time the Service Advisor does not know what is really required. Unfortunately, they can scare some customers off - even if the Tech is outstanding .....

I agree that cab removal is NOT necessary to replace this part, but 8 hours of labour sounds about right, when you consider that warranty book time is just shy of 5 hours to do this job, plus the diag time (checking DTCs, monitoring PIDs, air pressure testing etc.) of about 2 hours. All that said, I think 8 hours is more than fair for this job. It could be that the advisor is exaggerating the intensity of the repair by telling you the cab needs to be raised. The advisor my dealer has done this many times and scared the customer off too, when there is a job that I quote for the repair needed and he/she is not too enthusiastic about selling the repair for whatever reason.

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't know if I am missing something or if the SA was not telling me something. The only part she said they had to replace was part # 4C3Z-9B246-F. I feel like I am kind of getting yanked around by them but not sure what to think. I called my local dealer and am still waiting for a SA to call me back and give me a bill time to do this job, if they will even do that?

I know what you mean about the SA and techs. The tow truck driver that picked the truck up highly recommended the diesel tech at this dealership, 25-30 yrs exp and really knew his stuff, which I do not doubt, but the SA is scaring me with the quote I received and what was needed to be done.

My dealership charges less than $100 an hour (by a measureable amount). That would make the charge closer to $800 than $1200.

You need to talk to the tech. Any reputable dealer will let the two of you talk. Not about rates but about diagnosis and procedures.

So far as the labor time 8 hours is fair. Sounds like grid (matrix) pricing to me though. no need to pull the cab off. and it is possible to just install one part and fix the issue.

its a metirc truck so that cant be right. it may fit but still not right. Its a 35 or 36mm wrench.

the 15/16" was related to the stc fitting not the ipr valve.

Yeah didn't have a metric crowfoot that big, 1 1/2 fit. Just knew it was bigger than 15/16. Didn't realize you were talking about the stc fitting. My mistake.

Thanks to both of you guys on the size. Is it necessary to remove the IPR valve to upgrade the STC fitting?

On the later models yes, you can't remove the HPOP cover without removing the IPR valve. Not sure on the 03-04's.
