I always kick my tranny out of OD when im coming up to a stop to take advantage of the engines compression to slow the truck down and save on the brakes. Now my question is, does it hurt the tranny to drop it down into 2nd and 1st to take further advantage of engine braking? I dont mean dropping it into 1st from 60 mph or anything like that. I probably wouldnt ever really use it, unless im loaded heavy or towing a heavy trailer. More curious than anything.
i have always questioned this also! i tend to do it more so when I'm going around 50mph kick it down let er bark sounds awesome especially going under bridges.......
As long as your within the rpm limits it's fine. Some may argue it causes reverse torque stress, but so what, it's like down shifting a manual. When I built my C-6 I purposely installed a shift kit that enables me to hold any gear that I move the selector to, whether it's 2nd or 1st to aid in slowing down.
Personally, brakes are cheaper then transmissions, drive trains, engines ...
And a WHOLE bunch easier to repair/replace.

When you over heat your brakes coming down a grade and develop brake fade to a point that they aren't even working anymore and you run into a ditch just to slow for the upcoming turn, What does that cost?
I save shifing down my automatic (91' F350) to when it helps me save my brakes from overheating (Long Hills were brakes can start to cook) Don't usually bother otherwise. My brake pads never seem to wear out, they and the rotors tend to rust away long before that because I only drive about 15k-20k per year.
The standard (93 F250) I do shift down on all hills, it just feels better, but I don't use the clutch to brake, I always try to match the RPM's as close as I can get it before letting the clutch go back in.
Overall brake pads are a lot cheaper to replace than clutch plates whether its a manual or an automatic.
87crewdually ... Was the question anything about going down long grades ... NO!
The conversation is about coming to stops ... Only an idiot would tear up their drive train down shifting to stop!
There is a HUGE difference!
I've been driving over 40 years and fleet wrenching for a good part of that, I've replaced thousands of drive train components do to Iron Horse Cowboys Down shifting to a stop... It's ignorant!
There is nothing wrong with engine braking, engine braking and down shifting is very hard on the drive train.
I Just reread my last post and I didn't mean for it to sound so condescending ... My apologies!
Was in a hurry earlier, just spit it out and didn't reread it before posting! My bad.
Sorry!
I am very passionate about taking care of mechanical things ... I know it's kinda weird but I look at it this way, Mechanical things don't have feelings and cannot tell you when you are hurting them, Until you have!
i've never had any problems with shifting down my c-6 w/shift kit. at about 55 i slap second and at 20 i hit first. ive put 50K miles on a tranny that had 150K on it to begin with. i havent had any trouble with it other than it shifting a little too hard for my likings. but other than that no probs.

Sounds good,
I don't believe in downshifting when comming to a stop either. The E4OD is tough enough to handle this, but why put it thru the abuse. It won't hurt it in the short-term, but if you are looking at owning one of these truck for potentially 40 years like me (already have almost 20 years on my 91' F350) then it just makes sense.

Cool ... Keep doing it, sure wish I owned the parts store near you!
One day she'll show you what disrespecting her does in the long run!
I guess ill save my engine braking for when the auto gives out on me, and I swap in a 5 spd lol. Damn thing is still going strong with over 370k on it. Not bad for an E4OD.
