hey got a 93 351 E40D, and i'm looking to improve my shift points (tranny is good, no error codes, and no slippage). I realize it's not a sports car tranny, but when taking off from a dead stop expacially going uphill, it stays in 1st gear for too long. Also shifts into OD too early for my taste unless use the OD cancle switch.
1. I guess what i'm asking is, is there anyway to adjust the E40D'S shift points?
2.I know people frown on shift kits, but are they really that bad for the tranny?
3.I'm about to take her to the FORD HOUSE and get the tranny fluid and filter changed, and flushed, to see if that might help a little.
well a tranny should be serviced every 6months to a year for best operation.
having a tranny built by a shop to give the shiftpoints your talking about is the proper way. but you can buy aftermarket parts to make the e4od shift differently. some are good others are not. what rpm does it shift out of 1st when going up hill?
The E4OD is at the mercy of the ECM for control of shift points. It has "fail safe" features to keep it from self destructing should the ECM fail or the information exchange break down but thats about it. Modifying shift points in an E4OD must be done electronically by installing a kit that has electronic components with different resistance values and/or a different or "piggyback" shift control module to redirect the tranny's shift points.
She usually shifts from first to second from a dead stop at about 3K, unless i let off the gas pretty good to encourage her to hurry up and shift to the next gear. She shifts Ok, execpt every once in a while going up and down hills, she goes into 3rd at the bottom of a hill and then trys to slowly chug up it unless i get on the throttle pretty hard, and all the sudden she down shifts and the engine roars and launches her up the hill like a rocket
tranny sounds like its operating normal to me. the tranny takes speed inputs from the rear VSS . so if you going down hill it naturaly will upshift once you get going to fast or there is no load on the engine. you can always manualy drop a gear when going down to use more of the engine to slow ya down but our older rigs wont do this on there own just not smart enough. Now my AOD will kinda do this on its own but not much. but i also drive in D and only use od when im above 55-60mph
I see what your saying, i'm probably asking for too much street performance out of an off-road vehicle. Sometimes when approaching the bottom of a steep hill, she shifts into 3rd, and i wish there was a way to to hold her in second for longer. The hill i'm talking about in particular, is about a half mile, pretty steep, and the speed limit is 45, which is right where my truck has a hard time deciding which gear to be in.
hey you want your tranny to shift better(ha-HA) pull out number eight fuse
that controls the tranny, speedo and odemeter. i did this on my 96bb because the headlight chime wouldn't quit, man, did my tranny slam its gears!!(ha-ha) this is NOT recommended!!! my truck has 150,000 miles on it
the chimes went away though when i plugged it back in
