I experimented today with downshifing on my automatic to stop coming to a redlight. Often I will pull off the OD to help slow down a bit, but i found that if when i get to about 40 i pull the level to 2nd, then at about 25 i pull it to 1st, i can stop by barely tapping the brakes. I doubt this is something I would do all the time, because its more involved than braking, but do you all think its okay to do that with the truck? I mean, it's not hurting the tranny, is it?
thats something ive messed with a few times too, except i wait til about 5 or 10mph to shift down to 1. any faster than that feels too fast to me for 1st gear. i dont have a tach so i cant tell if its revving too high or not. ive had the same question as you though so sorry i cant help ya. ill be watching the post to find out though...

The only time I downshift manually is if I'm on a high mountain coming down a gravel logging road. But I only use 1st at about 5mph. That way I don't pick up speed going down. The downshift from higher speeds, like normel driving, will kill the trans.
