I have a 63 F100 with a transplant 292. I bought it with this old 292 and I have started rebuilding the engine. I am at the point of putting the timing chain and gears back on and I found in my book that there is a counter weight that goes on before the fuel pump eccentric. The problem is there wasn't one on when I pulled everything apart to send it to the machine shop.
Do I need this counterweight or can I put it together without the weight. I was wondering if the new timing gear took care of this problem. Can I run it without one? If I do need this weight where can I get one because no one in town or even ford has one.
That is a counterweight much like that used in the 428 CJs and should be used. Without it your engine should be internally balanced by a shop that specializes in balancing. Balancing requires a special, very expensive machine and a well trained operator.
I'm sure someone here has one they will part with from one of their core engines. Post a WTB ad in the For Sale forum.
That counterweight was no longer used after a few years on the Y's. If you can find one, it won't hurt to install it but don't spend much time looking for one. Ford decided that it isn't necessary and it's really not unless your building a race engine.
A '61 to '64 292 would not have had it from the factory.
A spacer should go in that position, however.
John M will probably have one.
Did you lose yours? It should have been with the parts you removed. If it wasn't, then we know at least one reason it had to be rebuilt.
There wasn't one on when I took it apart. I took careful note of what came off and I was (as you might guess) extremely suprised when the book said it was supposed to be there and I hadn't take one off.
The spacer, if my memory works, looks surprisingly like a thick washer. Did you find one of those on the nose of the camshaft? Seems there was a fuel pump eccentric that had a finger sticking out the rear that went into the woodruff keyway slot on the cam gear. Does my memory match with anything you found?

A diagram of the cam hardware is shown. In this diagram, only the counterbalance is shown #6290. You will have either that counterbalance or an equally thick spacer but not both. An easy way to identify that spacer is that it is broached for the key. None of the other spacer washers are like that.
