Distributor Install Help

I am rebuilding my 292 and I am at the point of putting in my distributor. I turned the crank until hole 1 was top dead but I don't know how to tell if my rotor is pointing at cylinder 1 on the cap. There is a number 1 on the cap, is that cylinder 1 and I need to line it up with the rotor. I have read my books and searched the forum but I am at a loss.

I would appreciate any help.
Thanks
MJ

The cap usually has a 1 next to the terminal. It really doesn't matter as long as you keep track of the number 1 wire and make sure that all of the others are installed in sequence. You might want to mark it with a marker or a dab of paint to make it easier to see. Make sure that you are at tdc on the compression stroke.

So when I install the distributor the rotor should point to the number 1 post while I am on tdc.
