The head numbers were cast between the exhaust ports up to about 56. After that, they are just below the intake flange. The block number will be above the oil filter, or near the distributor if it's an earlier engine. All of this together will give an idea what it is.
But it's really not important for the carb size. You have a 4v intake so you want a small 4v carb, Holley 390 or 465, Edelbrock 500, Demon 525, Autolite 1.08, etc.
FYI, a recent article in Y Block magazine was about a dyno test of various carbs. Testing was done to 5500 rpm. Of all the carbs tested, the Holley 465 was the best unmodified carb. Unmodified meaning that things such as milling of the choke horn, grinding on the boosters, and such was not done. Just run of the mill jet changes.
I'm sorry. I just checked the article. A Speed Demon 650 is 1st, of the unmodified carbs, followed by the Holley 465, and then the Autolite 1.08 (440cm). A 400cfm Carter afb came in last - this is essentially the same as the Edelbrock. It's an interesting article. The carbs ranged from 400cfm to 830cfm. It just shows that cfm is hardly the whole story.
Thanks Charlie, the engine came with the Autolite 1.12 venturi markings on the side, I also have a autolite with 1.08 markings. I dont think i want to use these carbs on the engine. I took one of the valve covers off and other than the sticky black film covering the rockers and inside the cover everything looks good, the truck has been sitting a while, the oil is very black in the pan. should i do anything special before i try to start it?
after i get a carb and new plugs and change the oil of corse, under the dist cap looked good, points look new.
