Andy,
I had just changed the blade in my 99. (you know, the fixed blade Stanley with the fleur 'd lis checkering)
Straightedge slipped. I picked the piece up off the floor and taped it on tight.
It's really less than 1/2" thick and sliced right off the bone.
Amazing how they don't even get a chance to bleed until you have a moment to think about what just happened...
SawStop has been out for a few years. The amazing thing to me is that none of the major manufacturers were willing to license the technology.
Ultimately SawStop went on to produce it themselves...
From what I've seen at trade shows it seems to be of comparable quality to my Jet Exacta saw.
Better to destroy a blade than your finger, but you're looking at at least a couple of hundred to replace the cartridge and blade each time it goes off on wet wood.
The amazing thing to me is that none of the major
manufacturers were willing to license the technology.
My guess is that the mass marketers were afraid of consumer non-acceptance
because of the cost of replacement parts (business is about making money, not
saving fingers). Still looks like a good idea, though.
