Hi, im working on a 1999 Ford F-150 XLT 2WD 4.6L.
The brake lights are not working about 90% of the time. However the third brake light always works. Blinkers and taillights function normally. I have already replaced the brake light switch on the pedal. This did not fix the problem. Anyone experienced this and know of a fix? Thanks.
If the 3rd light works all the time, then it wouldn't be the pedal switch. It would have to be the wiring, the bulbs, or the sockets. Have you checked the sockets with a meter while someone cycles the brake pedal?
The brake light switch feeds the 3rd brake light directly.
The tail light feed for brake lights is via the multi function switch as the turn signals share the tail lights.
I'll be you have a bad connection at the MF switch or a bad MF switch.
Push the emergency blinker switch, and see if the rear,s blink. If they dont, its likely the emergency light switch assy.Contacts in it could be dirty, and merely pushing it on/off a few times may correct the problem.
If it does,I would still replace that switch,as the problem will likely return.
The plastic pigtail connector at the back of the multifunction switch often is weakend by tilt columb use and the pins break out of the hard shell. You can buy the hardshell from the dealer because it is such a common issue. A bad multifunction switch can also cause the same issues or broken wiring near the switch.
Ok thanks for all the input. This is one of my work trucks so Ill check it out tomorrow at work. I have noticed that the guy that drives this truck uses the tilt every time he gets in and out of the truck.
I had the same problem and it was the tail light sockets with dirt & corrosion.
I rarely adjust the tilt wheel as I am the only driver.
New light sockets were about $12.50 each fromthe local Ford dealer.
Well it turns out it was the connector on the back of the multi-function switch in the steering column.
I drepressed the brake pedal while moving the steering column up and down, and sure enough the brake lights flickered on and off. The wires were pulling out of the connector each time the guy adjusted the tilt on the column.
Thanks for all the help
By the way, where is the chimer located that sounds when the key is in the ignition and door is open?
