On my order, I did not take the PTO prep option because I assumed it would be easy to add if I ever needed one. Turns out I may need one and I need to know if the PTO prep must be added from the factory or if it can be added onto the trans after delivery. I heard today that adding a PTO to a non-prepped trans is very expensive. A cab-off and trans case replacement. Does anyone know if this is the case?
I can still change my order since I don't have a VIN yet.
Looking through Ford's material this is not a "bolt on" option, it looks like you will need a case and numerous internal components. Adding in about 12 hours of labor for teardown and assembly and just taking a rough guess at parts pricing from experience, I can see this project easily exceeding $3,000. Keep in mind that parts are sometimes impossible to get for new releases and you may be forced to buy a new trans assembly instead. I can't even begin to guess how much that would be.
If I were you, I'd change my order and avoid a possible very big headache.
Confirmed that it is a big dang deal to add PTO after the fact. Lucky for me, my order could still be changed. That's one good thing coming from the parts delays..
$230 option from the factory. $3,000 if you wait to add later. No brainer.
If anyone thinks they may want to add a PTO powered device, they better consider it before they order their truck.
