PTO compatibility
Can anyone tell me for CERTAIN how to tell what PTO I need for a S47-ZF5
And what PTO I need for a S42-ZF5 Both are diesel trans.
PLEASE do not answer if you do NOT know and are just going to tell me they are the same thing or that they are all the same without having any first hand experience

You have to know if you have a close or wide ratio zf,
The wide ratio zf will accept the single gear (series 100) and multi gear(series 442) the single gear pto's gear should be stamped 2-p-649, the multi gear pto's should be stamped 5-p-1056 or 5-p-1152.
The close ratio zf only accepts the series 442 pto and that gear is stamped 5-p-1058.
the most economical way to pto something is to buy a used pto then buy a new pto input gear. there are some series 442 ptos right now on ebay for 80$ and you find the gear new online, I find truck part inventory.com to be useful and cheap, sometime they ever have used pto input gears and ptos.

Ok, this is what I found out so far. This is for a Muncie PTO
S-42 trans(87-95 diesel) drive gear is 41 tooth. PTO is 38 tooth
S-42/47 trans(87-97 gas) drive gear is 45 tooth. PTO is 31 tooth
S47 trans(96/97 diesel) drive gear is 43 tooth. PTO is 37 tooth
S-42 trans(87-95 diesel) drive gear is 41 tooth. PTO is 38 tooth
