I'm building my wish list for a new 350 and wonder about the Transmission PTO provision. Can anyone tell me what the primary use for this is? In my old army days a PTO's only use was to operate a winch.
I think that's still the primary use - for pole trucks, 4x4's, etc. But, there are many adapters for it such as hydraulic pumps and the like. Have you looked at the products lately? There's quite a selection for farm and ranch use - seed and fertilize distributing, etc.
If they install correctly it should not affect the tranny at all.
In this part of the country it sounds as if it might be a good thing to have to add value when re-sale times comes even if I never take advantage of having it. Thanks for the info and education.
You guys have any links to websites with PTO accesories that will work on our trucks?
Somewhere I saw a generator unit that operated off the PTO somehow and you could power a whole bunch of electric tools through a converter mounted in the bed. The converter was about two times the size of a shoe box. That's all I recall
Guys,
Do our transmissions come from factory with the PTO options? I have a 99 Reg Cab Long Bed with a V10. If they do have the PTO, where is it located?

You have to order the PTO Take-Off Provision from the factory. I have the ZF-6 speed and mine is a little plate on the side covering up the gear housing. You don't actually have a PTO, you just have it available if you want to add PTO driven accessories.

So. FMC is charging $250 for an access hole inthe side of hte trans?
Go to www.muncie.com. They have alot of ideas and the pto's and pumps to do anything you need to do with your truck. The auto's have the option too, you just have to order them with it. It is just a gear in the trans. and a plate on the side. All of the trucks have the wiring and programming for the throttle advance and control and TC lockup. Also, check www.chelsea.com. They have the same things as muncie, just different company and brands of course.
