another breakdown tonight...
this time was on the interstate and boy was it busy out there today. was cruising along at 75mph and noticed the regen cycle start. immediately, the message center changed to "safely stop now". i had no power at all and coasted to the shoulder before the engine died. an attempt to restart resulted in no more than a beeping from dash. last time i went into limp mode and could idle to the dealer...this time was a hundred dollar towing tab. it's now sitting on the dealer lot where the last fix of egr and radiator replacement took them better than a week. any idea what this might be?

I hate to say it but maybe you should buy a code reader. Then we all would know exactly what is going on.
My Edge Insight has temp warnings and stores codes, allows me to read them. I have been lucky enough to not need it tho.
Any smoke? White, grey, black?
Probably a condition of high temperature in the EGR, turbo, or exhaust system.

just got off the phone with the service tech...said it was likely an exhaust sensor thinking the system was overheating. bad thing is it will be a few days for him to even pull it in the garage to read the code.
...i feel like less of a man driving my wife's minivan. regarding the towing bill...i fully intend to ask ford to cover that if the problem is covered under warranty. thanks.

A code reader with the Ford codes would be a good investment. I can read and clear them with my Banks IQ. But I have never had any since the first issues I had when I bought the truck. Problem free for about 30K.

forgive my ignorance, but would "clearing a code" actually reset a sensor and allow the engine to run again? if so, agreed that it would be worth the money...especially since i just ordered a rental car for the week at $200.

It possibly would of in this case..but for how long? Maybe enough to get it home. Hard to say. You would need to be really careful and read the code on the issue. Obviously some codes like a eng temp or no oil press I would really investigate prior to clearing the codes.

Even if it could, I'm not sure you would want it to. It's only supposed to force a shut down to protect itself. For example, if it were to shut down due to dangerously high EGTs, you would NOT want to start it again. Doing so could destroy your engine!
And Scott, oil pressure isn't monitored by the PCM. Kind of scary, with nothing monitoring something that's that important!
