Ok all you fiver pullers. How much room do you have bettween the trailer and the bed rails. My trailer was too high in the front so I moved the toung up one set of bolts so it brought the front down but I don't want the trailer to hammer on my bed rails. Thanks for your help!!!!!
I tow a 32' AutoMate fiver with disc brakes and air bag suspension, GCVW = 21,300. When the coach was built I had a 5" spacer put between the axes and frame. This gave me 8" of clearance between the bed and the coach overhang. That is more than most people need but on entering my drive I'm turning off a sharp up grade to a steep down grade and my 90 30' fifth wheel ocassionally touched the bed. This set up gives me a couple inches of clearance even under those circumstances. Normally 5" or so is adequate for most people.
The disadvantage of the additional clearance is additional wind resistance and occasional overhead clearance. I had to have the power lines into the house raised because the 32' wouldn't go under the lines.
The instructions on my Reese hitch said 6". A little more would be better I would guess. I just bought a new trailer that was delivered to me from OH. I haven't hooked it up yet. I am shooting for at least 8", but that will depend on how level it is after hook up.
I'm using a SuperSlide by PullRite with my short bed. It rocks side to side and rotates fore and aft. It also has a uniquue cam arrangement that automatically slides the hitch back when the rig starts into a turn and then draws it forward again when the truck and fiver begin to track straight. It slides rearward 18" if my senior memory is correct.

Now do you guys have the hitches that rotate side to side and front to back? Mine just rotates front to back.
Guess I will have to lift my trailer so it sits level
Mine is a Reese 15k which rocks both side to side and front to back. After having to hook up and unhook on some unlevel ground I wouldn't have a hitch that didn't move both ways.
