I have a '69 half ton two wheel drive f100 with no power steering. Lately when I take sharp turns like into my driveway or a parking space, the steering column will make a popping noise and then sometimes it will become hard to turn the wheel. It is not excessively out of alignment and just had a grease job. What would you guys say is most likely the problem?
thanks for all the help
brad
Mabey the bearings in the column itself are worn out and somehow binding up when you really give it a tug. Could be outside and the noise just tranfers up through the coulumn. Have a friend listen while you turn or vise versa. and just track it down by ear. there isn't to many parts to the steering on these trucks.
You said it had a grease job, when was the last time the lube was checked in the steering box?
While there make sure the rag joint (looks like two metal U shaped pieces of metal on the steering shaft) are aligned. Sometimes if the splines wear, they get cocked when they slip.
im new so hi to all you true ford experts. i have a 70 F250 and what you have described is exactly what i had happen to mine. it was the rag joint (stripped). the real question is why or what makes the joints go bad. i want to convert to a ps system but dont want to lose my column. does any body have any thoughts on these two questions---thanks, indiana john
