weak 360?

I'm hoping somebody here can shed some light on why my 360 is such a dog. My truck is a 4x4 with a 4 speed and 4.10 gears. When I go up a hill it is all I can do to top it at 45 or 50. The other day I had to pull a 4 horse trailer and I had it to the floor just to do 60 on flat ground. I've recently done the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter and the timing is advanced quite a bit. The only thing that I know is not right is the exhaust has about a 2" tailpipe which I'm sure is quite restrictive. Thanks for any help!

What is the compression on each cylinder? This is where to start. If the compression is good, then you can look at other basics, such as the mechanical and vacuum advance working properly, carburetion, etc. But a quick check of your compression will let you know if your motor is sound. Won't do any good to hit and miss the other systems if you have an internal problem.

Also, did your motor ever run better.?

I haven't done any compression tests yet. I'm hoping to solve this all with a 390 fairly soon so I havent really worried about it too much. I just got the truck in october so I don't know if it ran better before or not...

Good choice. A sound 390 is a proven engine.

That's what everyone says! But in the meantime I'm wondering if there is anything i can do (or should bother doing) to smarten the old girl up a bit.

Definately start with the compression test, and go from there. That's an old engine from the sound of it, so it's probably just tired, and ready to be replaced.

Compression test will tell you if you need to dig further internally!

I can shed some light on the doginess for ya, it's in a crewcab 4x4 heaviest body for a 250 model, power brakes and steering
take away from power too. I never thought of my 1970 250 camper special as a dog, it had 360 2v and t-18 4gear w/4.10s
that beast would roar down the 1/4 mile in 16.2 @91mph with
exceesive tire spin and a slow shift into third. that motor didn't have more than 120 on any cylinder,85 on one,90, and a 100.
