Expedition alignment probs.

Hi.... I am brand new to this Site and just bought a 1997 Expedition 4x4 this past Friday. I had heard a lot about the brakes being bad on this model year and also a few things about the alignment. If you have that information about the problems with Expy's from 1997-1999, could you point me in the right directon of acquiring it?

I hope to learn a lot from this site as this is my Firs and definately not last full Sized SUV!

Much obliged!!!!

Expedition alignment probs.

Just had the front end aligned on my 98 exp.(1st owner) with 42k miles by a reputable independent alignment shop at a cost of $180. What a difference in handling. The drift at highway speeds is gone. I can now drive it at highway speeds with one hand on the steering. The reason I had it aligned was that I noticed excessive wear on the outside tread of the left front tire. By the way I still have the original 16" Goodyear Wranglers, but they will need to be replaced in about 5k miles.
The shop had to install the cam bolts to allow adjustment of caster and camber settings and they also made the height adjustment.
What really irritates me is that Ford left out the cam bolts to adjust the front end, probably as a cost savings on a $30,000 plus vehicle.
Overall the exp. has been a decent vehicle, but it is Ford's lack of overall quality and lack of commitment to customer satisfaction that will force me to look at every other manufacturer's offerings when looking for my next vehicle.

Did the shop align you truck to factory specs or to something different? If different, can you give us the specs?

I did not have a chance to speak with the owner of the alignment shop, as I picked up the vehicle after he left for the day. I will be out of town for the next few days, but I will ask him when I return and pass any info along.

Expedition alignment probs.

I just got my 99 expy back ( 4x4, 5.4 eng) from the dealer for a front end alignment. Damn thing cost me $290!!!!!!!!!!!!

The dealer said on the expy the factory doesn't put a adjust kit on it for the camber and castor? Instead we have to buy it from the dealer, $90 in parts, and $200 in labor to get the vehicle to align properly.

Anyone know if this sounds right? I already paid for it, but I just want to know if one is wasn't taken, and two, if ford should put an adjustable front end on a $30 K plus vehicle!!!!!!!!!!

thanks, jason

Change in plans, so I got my answer from the alignment shop today. The alignment shop told me they do not use the Ford specs as they do not work for the Expedition. All he told me was they use their own specs and would not elaborate. Hope this helps a little.
See my postings #32 and #34 for additional info.

In reply to JKATTZ, I am furious that Ford could leave these bolts out. There is no justifiable reason for this other than cost savings. Hell, if they offered it as an option I would have gladly paid for the additional cost of the cam bolts over regular bolts when I ordered the Expedition. I have voiced my complaint with Ford over this, but they could care less. The only way for Ford to hear us is not to buy another Ford product.

I am very interested in exact specs. I know the Ford specs don't work, but most alignment shops will align to these specs anyway. If there is something better, and it sounds like there is, I want to know about it. Any additional help is appreciated.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Mar-02 AT 05:58 PM (EST)]Any Napa or Carquest auto parts can get you the camber bolts for around $35. If you do not have a Napa or Carquest close by, Moog makes the parts for both companies. Some expies do not need a full camber kit all they need is the camber washers. Check out http://www.carquest.com/Chassis_tech.htm to find out if you need a full kit or not.

Expedition alignment probs.

jamie,

I went out to the Carquest site and the bulletin states that this is for the '97 models. I'm pretty sure that things haven't changed much, but would this apply to the '00 as well?

Thanks,
Doug

Nevermind. If I read the thing before posting, I would have answered my own question.
