Expedition alignment probs.

I have a 1999 E.B. 4x4 Expedition and can't keep it aligned. It comes out of the shop out of alignment, but the computer says that it is in alignment. I can't keep it in alignment and it has never been off road. My wife drives it. It only has 13000 miles and it has attempted to be aligned 3 times. Ready to trade to an excursion!

I HATE my expedition xlt. It is also out of allignment all the time, the suspension is the pits.

Incidentally, the same with my husband's 1998 contour...

I posted a message a while back, regarding the alignment on my expedition " Uneven tire wear".
I still have that problem. The front tires are cupping real bad. I rotate the tires every 5000 miles and no help. I feel it is the weak suspension, and the junk shock absorbers. Any other sugestions? P.S the dealer also told me it was alignment, which is not covered under warranty and cost $ 190.00 to do. That Figures.

I, too, am having problems with a 99 EB Expedition . It's not only the alignment problem, but the suspension is simply terrible. It sways and wanders all over the road. The smallest steering input causes the vehicle to veer sharply...sometimes all the way into the next lane.

Has anyone tried changing the shocks or sway bars to stiffen the suspension?

Have you had the steering checked on your expedition? I believe these have speed-sensitive steering - slow speed gives you more steering input per wheel movement than high speeds... maybe yours is staying in "sensitive"? My '99 seems to perform just fine, and so did my '97 (at least in the steering! We won't go into the other gremlins - faulty anti-theft system in the '97 and demon-possessed wipers in the '99!)

I too have alignment problems. I'm taking mine in again next week. I've been told that it could be a tire problem, but I don't believe that is correct. Maybe if enough owners post the problems they have been having at this website Ford will realize this is a manufacturer defect and will do something about it. Send all Expedition owners to this website to see if it truly is a universal problem. Alignments aren't cheap and they are not covered under warranty!

I would think alignment would be under warranty. My friend with a 98 dodge 1500 has had his aligned under warranty twice, I would think it would be covered by ford too. My mother has A 98 Ex. with 23,000 miles and hasn't had any problems. Neither have I with my 97 truck 4X4. Our driveway is 2.2 miles long of potholes plus the next 7.5 miles toward town is an unimproved road with plenty of pot holes and the final 8 miles to town is smooth highway. I take my truck down hunting roads beating and bouncing around and we haven't had any problems with alignment. Good luck.

I had my 99 EXP 2x4 with a 5.4 aligned at 5,000 miles, and now have 19,000 miles; no problems. We just came back from a 5,000mile trip through Canada towing a trailer. Great truck!

My problem is more of a wishy-washy suspension rather than a strict alignment problem. The darn thing just doesn't handle like I think a large SUV should....lotsa side-to-side rolling around curves and a very dangerous tendency to shift lanes if you take your eyes off of the road for an instant.

There was a SSM 10390 advising the alignment specs for 97 Expy were incorrect. I don't know about the newer models.

We experienced drift to the right, wear on outer drive tires, and oversteering. We've had the alignment addressed three times.

Here in Canada, our 3/60,000 kms (36,000 miles) warranty only covers alignment concerns up to 20,000kms (12,000 miles) or one year. I should think no one should have to pay for an alignment during that period.

I would think if you brought your vehicles in prior to the one year coverage expiring, and have it on record, Ford should pay to correct it. At the very least after spending $30,000 plus.
Ask (or demand) for Goodwill Service (no or reduce charge service after warranty has expired).

Expedition alignment probs.

I have a 98 Eddie Bauer with air suspension. Mileage is 34,500 and the rear tires are cupping on the inside tread. Had the tires remounted at about 22,500 miles with the dumb white letters put on the inside. They were rotated (X'd so fronts are on rear). Tires rolling the same direction since they had been flipped on the rims. Had minimal outside tire wear when they were on the front.
Dealer says there is no rear alignment. They read me numbers re the alignment which mean nothing to me. There is no tire bounce at all.
Anyone else with cupping problem on rear tires?
Do know the Expedition is harder on tires than the Explorer. Put 40,000 plus on 96 Explorer and never rotated the tires. Wear was even all around.
Any problems in particular with Goodyear tires??

We had an alignment problem (plus 28 other "problems") with our 97 Expy.

If you have changed tires or wheels or modified your suspension in any way, this may affect your ride.

But if you have not then-

There is an SSM #10390 under the Ford Bulletin listing "303000 Steering Handling". It says:

THE ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS LISTED IN THE 1997 EXPEDITION SERVICE MANUAL ARE INCORRECT THE FOLLOWING CHART LISTS THE CORRECT ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS CONTINUED ON SSM 10391 1997 EXPEDITION ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS

The SSM goes on to list the CORRECT specifications. If anybody would like those correct specs, e-mail me at babytren@sprint.ca

In other words, a lot of people, myself included, had a drift/pull to the right, brought the vehicle to the dealer (under warranty at the time) and may of had the alignment addressed with the wrong specs. So you get unusual tire wear and difficulty driving. Which we did.

Bring the vehicle back, out of warranty of course, and you have to pay to get them to fix their mistake. Take it to the Dispute Resolution Board or file a Lemon Law case and GET YOUR MONEY BACK!

p.s.

If anybody is experiencing problems with their Expy 97-99, I have over 90 pages of Owner Postings (problems and what they got Ford to do), TSB, SSM I can try to help you with.
