I'm pulling my radiator for a seam repair next weekend so I figured while it's out, I'll take advantage of the empty space up front and upgrade the 460's current timing set to an early style timing set.
I bought a Ford Racing SVO double roller multi-index timing set. The crank sprocket is adjustable from 8 deg. retard to 8 deg. advance in 4 deg. increments. I've heard that setting the cam "straight-up" or 0 deg. would add a "pile of torque" since the stock timing set is retarded 8 deg. If I advance cam timing to 4-8 deg. wouldn't it add a "bigger pile of torque" or is this one of those scenarios where "more is not always better"?
I run my 86 F250 4x4 460 C-6 at 4 degree advanced past TDC. I installed a Cloyes True Street Roller timing set & decided to go that route & I have never looked back. I pull about 19 inches of vac @ idle. The increase in torque is very noticeable. My 460 is stock with an Edelbrock Performer Holley 4160 600 CFM carb. Desmogged, with 2.5" dual exhaust with Summit Turbo mufflers. Of course with the cam advanced. I have run this set up for 4 years now. This winter I had the C-6 rebuilt & added a Hughes Towing Torque converter & TransGo shift kit which included a 6 clutch forward clutch pack, VS the five clutch stock set up.

It's a stock cam so I wasn't planning on degreeing it, but suppose I can spend a few extra hours to go for the gold. What is recommended if I do degree it?

Without knowing anything about it's specs, I would put it in straight up.

Alright, thanks Craig! I guess I might degree the cam first and find out what I have to work with. I'd hate to set it straight up when I can get more torque out of it advancing it... and the pain in the *** is that it takes two hours to get the timing cover off!
