another e4od problem

I have a 90 bronco with 5.8 and e40d.The transmission was leaking bad out of the front seal.It ended up not moving at all except in reverse. I pulled out tranny and inside the torque converter there was broken plastic pieces in it.What is this and could this cause tranny to not go forward.I think i may have finally burnt it up.I just cant figure out what those plastic pieces are, they have to be from inside the converter.I *&^%** hate this freakin transmission.Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks!:

Basically the torque converter ate itself. The fact that it still moved at all is impressive. When the converter self-destructs, typically the little shards get sucked into the hydraulic pump and pretty much ruin everything else inside the transmission.

I'm right there with ya on the E4OD issue. I've had three of 'em redone and only ONE survived long enough after that to use it for any length of time. Gimme an AOD or C6 any day. Folks here will argue that it can be "made stronger"... to which I say, why the heck should I have to MAKE it stronger? I don't have to MAKE my 302 or my 300 stronger just to keep it from self-destructing. The E4OD has a crappy service record... period.

My E4OD has performed remarcably well, it outlasted the engine (both were still working when they were redone, just not so well already) and when it was redone by some useless mechanic (he even placed some internals backwards) it still worked (in limp mode), and was properly rebuilt later. Now it has +16.000 miles and is working fine, the only issue it has is that the 2nd. gear doesn't seem to help the braking when going downhill.

I think Grey just had some really bad luck, btw mine is an old one, 93 year model, bought on October of 1992.

My ex wife's 1996 Bronco has the original auto with 161k on it, and that thing runs literally like new. I guess it's hit or miss with them.

'95 w/100k would bang-shift every once in a while but castrol high mileage MercV fluid kept that to a minimum
'96 w/196k runs almost perfect even though the PO wasn't much for maintenance The only time it's ever given me fits is slipping during a WOT 3-4 shift getting on the interstate, which in its old age I probably shouldn't have tried. It also leaks a bit from the tailshaft housing.

FWIW both had the factory installed external coolers.
