Transfer Case Problem

Just bought a '95 XLT 351 Windsor 5.8. (Pictures soon) It's my first Bronco and first car. I tried using the 4x4 today. 4-High works fine and when I put it into 4-Low it makes a thud noise. That seems normal but here's the real problem. When I take it out of 4-Low and it changes into 4-High the transfer case grinds and doesn't stop until I turn off 4-High too. Any ideas? Solutions? Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to FTE and the Big Bronco Forum. We will do our best to get you the most accurate info we can dig up.

Do you have automatic or manual front hubs? Automatics require that you back up about 15 ft. when shifting out of either 4WD gears to disengage the hubs. Manual hubs will need to be engaged or disengaged by turning the locking **** on each front hub from "locked" (in 4WD) to "free" (in 2WD) and vice-versa.

Thanks for the welcome.

Anyway, they're push button manual. I didn't want the full auto because of the bad reputation they had. I think the front left hub wasn't secured all the way though. I pretty sure that's why it happened but I'm curious about the damage and cost of repairs etc.

Ok, electronic t-case wit the push button selection but manually locked hubs. That's odd that you would get that happening. Although to shift from 4LO to 4HI or vice-versa, you should really be moving less that 4mph or better yet fully stopped.

You have to be absolutely, completely stopped to shift in or out of 4LO.

I've gone back and re-read the problem description and it really doesn't make sense to me. But that may be because I've never owned a truck with the electric transfer case.

When the transfercase goes through newtral while going from hi to low, sometimes the trans will start turning. (even if it's in newtral) To check this, turn the motor off and then shift to hi. If this is what is happening, I wouldnt worry, just turn the motor off every time. I believe whats happening is the little electric motor that shifts is shifting to slow. (old) You could replace it $$$, or just live with it.
