trouble reading VIN
trouble reading VIN
hey this is first time posting on this site and i was hoping to get some help on readin a VIN. cant figure out how to post picture so ill just write it out
xxxxxx4A-5991014L 01 1GG p-3,L/D
serial no. trim paint engine trans
it is a mercury and cab looks to a 61-63 styling while the box is a shot styleside and looks to be 57-60 styling wheelbase is 114 inches

looks identical to this truck pic i sourced off of wikipedia except for being a mercury.
i also believe the engine was a 223. cast # EBP-6015-L with a 3 on the tree
i would like to put in a larger straight six but use the stock transmission unless i am able to find a running used 223 somewhere
this truck belonged my to late grandfather and i would like to bring it back to near original look while still being functional. most parts have been taken but most of the important ones remain except for heads, intake, and exhaust.
And i am also wondering if there is any kits to take the fuel tank out of the cab and place it under the bed like a more modern vehicle.
All input is greatly appreciated. thank you.

This is a poor example, because it's a 1965 F100 2WD with the wrong Styleside bed on it. It was not factory installed on these trucks.
This is the 1957/60 "wrong bed" so called because it was also used on some 1963 F100/250 2WD's / 1961/64 F100/250 4WD's / 1965 F100/250 4WD's & 1966 F250 4WD's.
The reason why this bed will be found on 1963 F100/250 2WD's, but not 1961/62 F100/250 2WD's Stylesides is:
The Uni (Unit-Body Integral Cab Styleside Pickup) was canceled midyear 1963, so Ford then used this bed on 1963 F100/250 2WD Styleside pickups.
i also believe the engine was a 223. cast # EBP-6015-L with a 3 on the tree.
It's a 223, but this engine dates from 1954 thru 1959.
Ford changed the 223 head in 1960: How is the valve cover retained to the head? With two studs (1954/59), or 8 bolts (1960/64)?

Here's some of it.
Canadian VIN's thru 1965 are unique. 1966/68's are the same as US trucks.
5991014L
5 = I-6 engine.
99 = Styleside Pickup.
10 = 100 Series.
14 = 114" Wheelbase.
L = Left Hand Drive.
The rest of the info is hit or miss, as I only have refs for 1965 Canadian trucks.
01: Interior trim code. No correct info to decode it. 01 might be Silver Grey Vinyl, but I'm guessing.
1GG: 1 is the interior paint code, GG is the exterior color code. I have no info to decode what these colors are. GG might be Yellow, but again, I'm guessing.
P-3? I haven't a clue.
L/D: Ford Light Duty 3 Speed Manual Transmission.
If a 1963/64, it's all syncromesh. If a 1961/62: No syncromesh first gear.
right on this is all very good to know. thanks for the info.
So i have a few more questions now.
How common is a '63 wrongstyle short box these days. and;
how do i tell if the transmission is a 63/64 full syncromesh, or a
61/62 without syncromesh on the first gear.
p.s. my grandma will like all this new found knowledge of the truck.

definitely gonna do the mustang tank swap-in so i can with a decent stereo at some point in time
on a side note i scored a 64 long box styleside with the 223 and three on the tree for a thousand bucks. plus there is some body parts ill be able to use. ill have my wrong side mercury up and running in no time.
thinking about swapping the cabs across cuz the one i purchased is a helluva lot better shape then what i had for a starting point. major highlight is that floor pans aren't totally rusted out. thnks for the help guys

If the truck is a 1963/64, it will have the Ford type 3.03 3 Speed Manual all Syncromesh Transmission, which was introduced in 1963.
No Uni's after mid model year 1963.
Sellers are usually clueless, list their trucks as the wrong year and/or with equipment never offered. ebay ads for vehicles & parts are the absolute worst for wrong info.
Craigslist ads aren't much better.
For example, FTE member tbm3fan posted an ad a coupla days ago he found on Craigslist for a 1964 Ford pickup. The pic clearly shows it's a Chevrolet!

How could a seller be that clueless?!

Are you thinking that the '64 Styleside long box will bolt onto your 114" wheelbase truck?
I'm not sure that's be an easy swap............
BarnieTrk
no im planning on using the motor and some of running or functioning parts for the swap over. short box is still in fairly good condition. was gonna use the cab off donor truck though and after deeper examination found out the truck sitting in the bush is still in better shape structurally.
