I am sure this has been covered before, but the search wouldn't show me anything. I am thinking of taking the 6 ft bed off of my '87 F-150 and want to know what to expect. It is in good shape (no rust), and the bolts look good so hopefully I can get the nuts off. For all of you that have done this, how heavy is the bed? Can 2 people pull it off? Does anyone have any tricks for getting it off? I figured while I had it off I would give everything a paint job too.
Disconnect the filler neck(s) for the gas tanks. Take the tailgate off, I would have three people. One on the back, and one on the front on either side.
The bolts will be pretty rusty inside the bed's structural crossmembers, but the threads will probably be OK. Start soaking them with Liquid Wrench each day a few days before you're ready to do it, and use Anti-Seize lubricant when you put it back on. Two big guys can handle it easily.
You are going to have a tough time removing the bed
I removed the bed on my 92 F-150 Custom last summer.
The bed was shot. The bolts are extremely hard to remove.
I would suggest removing the gas tank and use a cutting torch
to cut the bolts away. This works well and it gets the job done quicker. I have done this on an old Ranger too. I would suggest
looking for a newer bed if your going through all the trouble ripping it off. Ford beds are prone to rust over the fender wells.
Also you may find that the cross members under the bed floor may be in bad shape too. I replaced my bed with a brand new
old stock 1996 8 ft with single rear tank. My front tank had a leak so I did away with it completely. It was a big project but it was done right. Only a suggestion!!!
