OK, I remember something about flourescent lights on here but can't find it.
The question I have is I want to put a work bench in my shop and I want to be able to have a bright light overhead when I need it, but also want to be able to move it if it is going to get in the way. I was thinking of putting a flourescent light on some sort of a pulley or retractable cord.
What do you guys do when you need a little extra light?
Open the Garage door lol
Seriously I have 9ft plus ceilings in my garage. I mounted 2-4 tube fixtures slightly in front of my benches and they work great very little shadow. The 2-tube shop lights are a waste IMO spend a few $ and get a quality fixture
Hope this helps
I originally installed flourescents through out my garage, including one over the work bench. Later I changed out the one over the bench with a halogen. The fixture looks exactly like my other flourescents, but has two 150w halogen bulbs instead of flouresent tubes. Wow! what a difference. Lots more light, no electronic flicker. Much much easier on the eyes.
Whenever I set up a shop, I space outlets in the ceiling around the shop connected to the light switch. You can then plug your lights in and move them easily. Just make sure you have a couple of incandescent bulbs on the circuit wired in permananently.

That's how my dad an I did it in my woodshop. Set the dual tube fluorecents in a patter with one in the center an one in each corner at a 45 deg from the walls.
Thanks guys,
I was thinking that mounting them on the ceiling (9 ft +) would be to high and wouldn't give me enough light, but it sounds like it works for everyone else.
I have about 12 4ft flourescent lights in mine, those cheap ones from Home Depot (about $7.00 each). I'm in the middle of a MAJOR garage sort out & I'm probably gonna throw those out & install 6 or more 8ft lights..

The 4' units usually come with chains so you can hang them in any position.

Some of those cheapo units from HD have electronic ballasts and work real well with good bulbs. The cheapo units with transformer type ballasts are junk. They are real dim no matter what bulbs you put in them. If you have the electronic style keep them and just add more of them or some 8" lights also. You can never have too much light in a shop.
I've have in my shop 24 lights, 6 rows, 4 lights together. The bulds are high output daywhites hard to find, but there the best I have found. I build awnings and signs, and I use the same lighting in them. Remember you get what you payfore. Don't go cheep on your lighting you will need it later.
The problem I have is that my garage is cold. And the lights have a hard time coming on. They flicker all the time due to the cold. Has to be the cold cause there great in the summer. Thinking of changing them too regular light bulbs. ANy ideas?
i have fluoresents, halogens, but nobody has metioned mercury vapors these will really light the area around! setup mercs. in the top fluors on the sides along with halogens on trees too much light maybe! but hey to each his own
