Noisy Cab

I have an '87 F150, 302, manual 4X4, that runs great. The only problem is that it is really noisy inside the cab, what can I do to quiet things down in there. It has carpet and a headliner, but they don't seem to help much. I am sure some of the noise comes from the 31X10.50 mudders, but not all of it. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Longneck

Buy a really loud stereo?

Seriously, I would bet a good application of udercoating would help to quiet the tire noise.

The loud stereo is the problem! When I'm on the freeway I don't realize how loud it is until I pull into town and stop then I realize I have to yell for the passenger to hear me
I will try some undercoating.
Anything else??

You can apply sound deadening on the floorboards, back wall and the doors. That should quiet things down quite a bit, but is quite labor intensive.

What akford was referring to was a product called Dynamat. This stuff is not cheap and either comes in sheets or a spray on application.

You can spend a ton of $ on products that claim to quiet up your cab, or you can go cheapo!
1. floor boards- aquire a 3/8"-1/2" horse stall rubber mat. many retailers sell "rubber truck bed liners" I prefer feed stores! Cut to fit under carpet. If you're really serious install on the rear interior wall of your cab.
2. door panels- insulate everything that does'nt interfere with your window mech.
3. Remember sound travels through vibrations, anything you can seal, isolate, or insulate, will minimize cab noise, fiberglass batts, spray foam, rubber, dirty socks, they all have value. I wouldn't recommend using the dirty socks anywhere near the heater vent.

I hadn't even thought about using a rubber mat under the carpet, good idea! Keep 'em coming.

That rubber mat under the carpet is a great idea!!

There are a lot of cheaper alternatives to Dynamat.
Rammat, Fatmat, Brown Bread, etc... the best way is to search and compare each product's price per square foot. Ebay is a good place to buy sound deadener for cheap.

I got some asphalt based sound deadener from Parts Express and it is VERY similar to Dynamat Original. I used about 12 square feet on the doors and back wall of the cab... worked great and was only about $25.

I used Cascade brand spray deadening to do my two front doors before I put new speakers in. I can't tell about road noise because I have no hoodliner and the engine sorta drowns every other noise out. BUT, When the speakers are turned very loud I no longer hear the metallic vibrating sound of the interior door panels. I believe that if I had applied another coat on the exterior and interior door walls I would have noticed a real big improvement. Good stuff!!

I have never heard of the Cascade brand spray, I will run an internet search on it.
I was looking at my truck last night and could actually see light coming through the firewall where the clutch goes through, no wonder it is so loud in there!
