I've noticed twice in the past couple of weeks that when I first start the engine, the O/D light flashes (in some sort of Ford morse code) for perhaps 10 seconds. Then it stops. I haven't noticed it while I was driving, although I am not sure I'd see it if it did, I'm not exactly staring at the shifter while I drive.
I've searched a couple threads on here and it sounds like this could mean any number of things. Any ideas? I am going in to dealer tomorrow morning for recall stuff, so if I need them to pull codes I can, I am just always skeptical of dealer mechanics so like to be armed with info and appropriate questions...
Have you noticed any shifting problems? Ford will probably charge you $100 or so just to pull the codes. Hopefully it is something simple like a sensor.
Taking the truck to the dealer should be a last resort.. What city in NC do you live..? Maybe a fellow member can stop by and read your codes for ya.. and go from there.. There is a lot of expert help here on the forum to solve the problem without going to the stealership..
Suggest you start another thread saying ... "Need Scanner Help in xxxxxxx, NC.."
this was a comon problem with a few trucks at my fire co. and from a few frineds with ford trucks, and they all turned out to be some kind of trans issue.
Yes, found out this morning that dealer wanted $110 to pull the codes! I politely said "over my dead body," let them give me my free oil change, got my recall speed control thingy replaced, and left. I haven't noticed any shifting issues. I have been hauling the horse trailer a lot lately, but it's only about 5000 lbs and haven't had any problems.

That's because the flashing OD light means there is a transmission error code stored in the PCM's memory. A flashing OD light always means there is a transmission issue.
Ignoring it usually leads to a transmission rebuild.

Not always.. I had a flashing OD light and it was a bad VSS sensor a couple of years ago....
Thanks for all the info, y'all. I'll get codes pulled and may even have time to clean off the sensor this week...at least I can tell myself that, good intentions count, right?
