Duramaxfanatic1,
subscribing to this one i get the same thing i installed a mechanical gauge and thats a pretty scary thing to drop down, i notice when cold its about 40 psi when warm 20 reeving up then it just takes a crap and goes to 0 at idle. no dieing tho
Based on what you said so far yours is going to be excessive clearances at some or all the engine bearings, its just to much space for oil to make up for.
The oil literally falls out around the journals leaving little to make it to the gauge for a final reading.
The oil pressure reading is "end result", what flow/pressure is left over after sent through lubing the engine. A high volume oil pump can and will help the condition some but new bearings/rebuild are the better option.
You might even hear 2, 3 low knocks quickly tapering off in intensity after first starting the motor cold, but you might not yet either.
More history on the motor might shed more light on it but if its higher or very high mileage motor that had moderate maintenance over its life that's probably what is going on with it.
Oh and it could be valve seals clogging the pump screen, a sign that is a problem would be blue smoke out the tail pipe when the motor is cold, quitting once the motor is up to running temp, then blowing smoke again during moderate / heavy deceleration.
the engine is fairly new actually it probably has around 10 thousand miles on the block it had previously suffered from an overheating condition due to the radiator leaking when my dad had it. he overheated the engine several times and bent a valve lifter, the engine was hi mileage so he went ahead and got a new rebuilt long block and before he could say actually no he bought his gmc. so i kinda made the truck my own and got it all running again with the new engine. he said he didnt think it was a problem since it happened before.. i dont have any knocks i think i kinda hear a weird sound when i hold out gears a little bit tho.
If so, all that is, is a dummy light that drops to 0 when the actual oil pressure drops below about 10PSI, The rest of the time the gauge will sit in the same spot within the normal range regardless of what the pressure is.
i'd suggest investing in a good aftermarket mechanical gauge.
ive seen specs on some vehicles go as low as 4 psi to turn off an oil pressure light or make a ford dummy gague read "normal" mechanical gague is the way to go, they can be had cheaply at your local auto parts store.
i have a mechanical gauge too.. pretty scary to see that drop to 0 when its idling ill down shift just to get it to rev a little when im crusing just to make pressure it has like 40 psi when its first started before its warmed up
