Front end issue (possibly in front axle?)
Front end issue (possibly in front axle?)
Ok, so you guys have been spot on so far! This time I have an issue that I believe is in drivers side FRONT hub, axle, bearings, could be differential I guess as well. I notice it at slow speed like a parking lot turning hard to the left. If I speed up it goes away. Last night after driving through a grassy parking area I was going to have to go through a pretty steep grass covered ditch and I put it in 4 high, it had the same jerky feeling while turning as if it were in 4 low on pavement.
It makes a clunk clunk.....clunk clunk.....clunk clunk type of noise.
I do not see and fluid or grease leaking anywhere.
Any guesses or suggestions?
Thanks,
Ryan

By the way, I need to get this truck back right so I can continue to pull the toy. I built this thing from a tub so mechanically I can hold my own but, diesel 4X4 is foreign territory!

Freaking awsome looking stang.... Im a big fan of the stang. Useta have a couple, then I had kids...they wouldnt fit (so the wife said, I showed her they would, and then she just said it was a pain in the *** to fold the seat up and climb in the back to buckle in the car seat and then I told her that I would personally buckle the kids in everytime we went anywhere...long story short, I lost that battle, sold the Stangs, and bought an Expedition (at least I talked her out of a minivan))Anyway, back to your question... Does it do the same thing if you lock the hubs in manually? Ive seen a lot of posts on here that point to faulty or dirty auto locking hubs, so maybe it isnt engaging the hub correctly. I would try taking the hub apart and giving it a good cleaning and regreasing and see if that helps.
track...don't mean to hijack, but I too am experiencing this noise just after installing my 4" Skyjacker lift. Only happens when turning hard left at slow speed. Sounds like a grinding noise or rubbing noise. I thought it might be the tire rubbing somewhere, so I painted witness stripes on both tires inside from tread to rim...and nothing is rubbing them. I checked the pads and rotors, but everything seems okay. Any suggestions along with Track's concern would be appreciated.
front axle shaft u joints for sure.
look for a rusty dust around the axlejoint a sure sign of imminent doom.
MoyockPowerstroke sounds like you have a unrelated problem more of a wheel bearing or caliper issue that will need some hands on checking

Thanks...I've already been pricing wheel hub bearing assemblies....its from my damn calipers hanging up several times last summer and again recently as Spring broke...I replaced both rear calipers in the fall and the two front ones this Spring...now it appears the heat may have taken out the wheel hub bearing...it was over 700*F....hoooottt.
Pretty sure these are non-servicable wheel hub bearings, so no cahnge of re-packing them right? There is probably brinelling anyway.
