I have been looking around on this site for several months trying to do some research for my 64'. I have a good ideal for the direction I want to go but am having a hard time deciding what I want to do for the motor. I know most of you say to keep the 292 but I can't find any info about the horsepower and torque, after a mild performance build. as long as I can burn some rubber everyonce and a while and cruise the freeway I will be cool with it. can any one help with some stats on 292 power?
Would suggest you check the Y-Block section of FTE plus the Y-Blocks Forever site and John Mummert's site. Plenty of info in those spots and people willing to help.
According to the 64 operator manual, the truck 292 was rated at 160 hp at 4000 rpm. torque was 237 @ 1800 rpm, CR was 8:1. The truck engines were setup with small intake valves 1.65 inches, a large combustion chamber, and small 2V carb. If you are needing to do any engine work, it is easy to take them to 200 HP, and much higher if that is your cup of tea.
I find the hp figure matched to 4000 rpm hard to believe though, as the stock carb begins giving up closer to 3500.
Here are some estimates: Dual exhaust + 4 barrel carb 200 hp. High performance cam and G or 113 heads with CR of at least 9:1 plus high ratio rockers 250 HP, Full blown high performance rebuild with forged popup pistons, porting, balancing, 1.94 intakes and anything else you can think of 275 HP plus (very expensive and would also call for different transmission).
All of the above has a significant price. It isnt unusual to wrap up $800 in just the dual exhaust, 4V intake and carb. You could get totally carried away and pick up a set of the aluminum heads.
As ND pointed out these would be estimates of gross HP. Others please feel free to jump in.
