I am getting ready to strap my 4bbl on this weekend. I got an original 4bbl intake from the original owner and just bought a Holley Street Avenger 570 carb last night.
I've been told that the Holley 390 would also be a good choice. Your best bet for finding an intake is definitely Ebay.
Interestingly, my mechanic mentioned that he had a preference for Edelbrock carbs over Holley in terms of maintenance. His OPINION was that the Edelbrock was more stable when in an application such as mine.
(My '59 competes with 5 other vehicles for drive time so it might get a 100 miles a month on it, also I'm 42 and live in a coastal town with a max speed of 45 mph, so the truck isn't racing anyone)
LOL Canzus, I wouldn't have minded a lower speed limit around Los Angeles. I drove my '63 Unibody all over Southern California, where everyone wants to go 80 on the freeways, while I'm in the slow lane going 65. 4000rpm redline and 3.89 rear doesn't make for a long-legged journeys, LOL. Neither does 4 drum brakes do well around people who brake as late as they can. Good thing I moved to North Dakota, even though the posted speed limit on the freeway through the city here is 70, whereas in SoCal it was 65.
Even so, my bone stock 2bbl 292 does great. I have plenty of passing power, and acceptable fuel economy for something that while light, has the aerodynamics of a brick. Nevertheless, that need for real power comes along, LOL. I have an HD 292 out of a '61 Merc farm truck, going to build a stout 300hp all forged internals y-block, and mate it to a well-built C4. I plan on using the SpeedSmith aluminum heads and an aluminum 4 barrel intake, with an Autolite 4100 to mix it all up. Sure, I thought about going the easy way, with a 302 or 351, but where's the joy in that? Only thing worse than tossing a y-block for a Windsor is putting a Ch*vy in an old Effie . Y-blocks' aftermarket is better than ever, and the Ford lover in me refuses to let a motor like the Y-block die.
Yeah, I know swapping out a Y-block for a 302/351 is an easy/ inexpensive way to go, but after you look under the hood at a small block it just seems like you traded down.
