I finally tried the Rustoleum kit.... It is basically the same as the Hurculiner. Make sure whatever kit you get is a two-part EPOXY kit. The Duplicolor kit at WalMart is a Vinyl/paint base - junk. I bought 2 gallons from www.sportsmansguide.com for $30 a kit (cheaper if you join their club) and sprayed it on with a $20 undercoating gun. It looked EXCELLENT !!!! I did think that a few areas were a little thinner than I wanted, so I ordered a third gallon. I rolled it on with the Duplicolor roller cover, NOT the Rustoleum cover - it is much smoother now, but there are a few runs and "puddles" where I did not do a great job of rolling. If I were to do it again, I would buy 4 kits from sportsmans guide and spray it all on at one time. With shipping and all, it would still be about $150 and would look like the $450 jobs.
Maybe you have a chance to make a real tuff off roader! Buddy of mine rolled on the rustoleum liner on his scuff plate on the door and also the foot plate on the door frame, plus the lower 18" of the body/doors on both sides and the rear... Now I have to admit, he's a serious offroaderand frankly doesn't care about how it looks -- though it looks just fine to me on his dark gray F350 which is also his shop truck.
I have a spray on liner, it was there when I bought the truck. It started pealing up so I bought some roll on at Wal-mart and use it to patch any scratches or spots where the spray on came off. To me the roll on seams to stick better. I am guessing the shop that spraied the liner did not do it's prep corectly. So make sure you scuff it well then clean it!
So far, the Rustoleum kit is working out great... It has really helped with items in the bed sliding around, and it still looks great.
I have to admit, I haven't really hauled anything heavy, except my ATV, and it is still fine. I had a car battery tip over and leak acid all over the place, but it didn't seem to faze it.
I currently have a herculiner that is a year old. I have a choice of rolling more herculiner, or attempting to spray rustoleum on top. I'm affraid that if I try the rustoleum that it won't properly adhere to the herculiner.
I'm not sure about the Herculiner, but I did roll on additional coats of the Rustoleum kit after the first coats had set for about a month. I haven't seen any issues with it not sticking to itself.
Hey, I have a plastic dura-liner or whatever. Took it out the other week to sweep up underneath. The paint is worn to metal in many places from the liner and I don't like that. How do you think the roll on stuff would work to protect the bed from the plastic liner?
go to www.sportsmansguide.com and do a search for bedliner or rustoleum. They have it for $29. Also, if you buy more than 1, do a search on the internet for "sportsmans guide coupons" and you should find a quite a few different codes for a savings of $5 or $10 dollars off of your purchase.
