I just picked up the Rustoleum Road Warrior roll on bed liner on Ebay, and have a question about preparing the bed.
In order to remove the paint, all the way down to the metal, should I use acetone/paint thinner/remover, or use an electric sander, or maybe a drill with the wire brush bit?
Not sure if what you have is the same as the Herculiner. But, I did the Herculiner on my truck. Basically you scuff it up with a scotch brite pad that came with my kit. Rub it down with acetone. Tape it off. Then applied 2 coats.
I used a roll on bed liner on my truck last year. You do not have to remove the paint. Scuff up the paint with sand paper then wipe it down with paint thinner.
My kit was a herculiner. I have had no problems with the liner. If you install it as directed it was to thin for my tast. I used a third coat ( extra quart) and the liner is very good. Two of my friends also instaled the liner and are happy with it.
Mine looks good with the straight lines from the tape. I don't really put too much back there. Just spare tire, wood and some steel. Has held up good. The Herculiner is real rough so it keeps stuff from sliding around back there. Didn't take long to do and for $80 I couldn't complain. I like it.
Oh, and for about a week my truck stunk up the garage after I did it.
The Herculiner is what I used and it is a one part mix. The rustoluem kit that I looked at is a 2 part epoxy. It had a hardner and a resin type substance. The preperation could be different for that type. If you can i'd try scuffing a small area and mixing some up to try it if you can. I know some epoxy type mixes will soften the paint underneath, and make a real mess. The ones that I looked at where at an OLLIE'S bargin store. They sell close-outs and stuff like that. There the kit is $20. I know it is a rustoluem but I don't know if it is called road warrior. It said it contained enough for a 8' box. If I get back to the store and they have them any more i'll check it out.
good luck
I would like to know more about how the Rustoleum kit is. How thick did the one kit do? Was that over the rail? Is it at all flexible or soft, or is it the super hard type? Does it have a rubbery feel or the plastic feel? Let us know....
I received the Rustoleum kit yesterday, and hopefully will get to put it on soon. Unfortunately, the instructions say not to put it on in temps less than 50 degrees, and right now we are in the 30-40's.. Since this IS Texas, it will probably be back in the 70's next week..
On a slightly different note; would the roll on liners work on a travel trailer tongue and frame? This would keep rock chips and etc. from nicking up the frame. I'm just concerned about how well this stuff will set up & cure on a horizontal surface.
Please let us know how the Rustoleum kit works for you.....
As far a a trailer tongue.... I would think that most any kit would work well for this... you are not looking for a thick build up so the cheaper roll-on kits would probably work well.
I put the Rustoleum roll on kit on the bed on Saturday. So far, I am very impressed. The preparation was a little time consuming, but relatively easy.
You just sweep out the bed, wash it with soap and water, scuff it up with the supplied pad, wipe it out with mineral spirits, mix the activator with the base, and roll it on....
After two days of sitting in the sun, it has set up nice, and looks really good. Due to time constraints, I didn't get to put it on as thick as I wanted, but I purchased two kits, so I am going to put another couple of coats on in the near future..
So, for $25 bucks per kit, it seems like a great deal.
One note, I definitely would go with a spray in if you are going to do heavy hauling. I really don't think the roll in will hold up well to heavy duty use (i.e. dropping heavy loads of brick or rock in your bed!!!)
In response to penquin's question about using a roll on liner on a trailer tongue, absolutely. We applied the herculiner on the tongue and box of our 20ft. flatbed. Went on easy, and worked like a charm. It has been almost a year and it is holding up well.
Hey bddo... how is that herculiner holding up? I plan on coating my 91 Ranger, Longbed, course i want it think on the bottom (7 foot box, 5 feet wide) What do you all think? Its a toss up between Herculiner (about $80 off Ebay) and Rust-Oleum (about $40 off ebay). Would appreciate any replies. Thanks everybody.
