I pull up to the elk with my ATV and then tip it on end. I tie the front legs together then the backs. Then I take a ratchet strap and ratchet the legs up to the front rack then I go around to the front and put my weight on it and tip the atv upright. The elk is now resting on the back rack the legs are on both side of the ATV facing forward. I take strap and ratchet down the body. Then I drive over and load the ATV with elk into my truck and drive home. Hows that?

That just sounds too easy...
Most places I've hunted you can't drive to, and don't have a ATV. We usually end up quartering it, trim the rest of the meat off of the carcass, then pack it out.
When you guys pack it out you take buddies with you to help carry it or do you do it by yourself one trip all you can carry or multiple trips?
Must have wolves don't you? How quick do they show up?
With promises of elk steaks, you can usually get enough help to pack out in 1 or 2 trips.
Wolves are in the Wallowa mtns. in far E. OR., have seen mtn. lion nosing around and occasional black bear,....... dont leave the meat down too long.

No wolves in the areas I hunt, but there are some cougars and black bear.
Usually hunt with my dad, and we have a game cart with big wheels on it so we can usually just pack it to a logging road and then cart most of it back to the truck.
Usually takes us 2 trips for a Cow elk...
But now after my back injury my system will probably have to change. Hoping to get a ATV to help out.
Some people use horses don't they?
People who moose hunt around here are generally close enough to a road or logging road so they can use an ATV or get someone with a tractor or skidder to pull it out.
