April Chat thread anyone?

So despite my harassment of my friend to buy a Ford or Dodge he bought another Chevy truck. It has what appears to be a dana 60 rear end and I have other dana 60 rear ends. The problem his has the 4.56:1 gears and I have one that has the 3.73:1 gears. It would be nice to switch the gears, but if I recall you need some special tools to do this like a spreader or something. Am I right? If so it might be easier to just swap rear ends. I've only changed gears in ford 8 and 9 inch rear ends. The dana 60 is quite a beast to be taking in and out and the gear swap may or may not be an easy swap.

He got an 86 extra heavy duty 1 ton with a 454 and it has the hydraulic brake booster that hooks up to the power steering pump and coolers for everything. Ya figured it would be easier to swap rear ends than change gears, guess it's time to measure stuff to make sure it will fit. The rear end I have came out of a 79 Ford 1 ton, if it don't fit I have a hammer and duct tape Changing rear ends in my Falcon was pretty easy, could hold it up with one hand. I think it would be easier on the truck to roll it on its roof and drop the rear end in with a cherry picker

Yeah.....Good luck with that rolling it over thing I want to see photos!!!!! In 1986, GM used the Dana 70 in the one ton duallies, but also used the 14 bolt in the 1 ton single rears (and maybe some duallies) that is not to say thay did not use the Dana 70's in single rear apps. in oddball applications. Make sure it is even a Dana first.
If you go to swap gear sets and carriers, be ready to replace the carrier. I saw a lot that spun the bearings on the flange side of the carrier.

Ya I gotta figure out what it has first. It looks similar the the dana 60's I have, it could very well be a dana 70. It is a single rear wheel, it does have a few things I have not seen in awhile, definitely made for pulling barns down. Sill rather have a Ford one ton with a 460.
