fuel injection?

I was wondering if any of you have installed aftermarket fuel injection on your engines. I saw a slick system that im thinking about trying. It is the powerjection III and it looks pretty straight forward. Other than performance what are the pros and cons of fuel injection?

I'm looking at the Megasquirt systems. They're do it yourself but I have most of the electronic equipment required.
I recall seeing a website that showed a Ford Flathead that someone had equipped with a Chevy Tuned Port Injection system, but the url escapes me at the moment...

Wade,

I'm working on the MegaSquirt for my big Caddy engine. When I first starting dreaming of fuel injection I was going to use the 87 through mid 90's GM throttle body injection system as its pretty straightforward, very reliable, and readily available. I was going to just build a plenum box that bolted in place of the carb. I was even considering multiple throttle bodies (Moon Equipment used to sell something similar for a SBC)

I have since picked up an original Caddy port fuel injection intake manifold, fuel rails, injectors, and trhottle body. Thats why I chose to go with the MegaSquirt controller.

So far I have the computer almost completely assembled, and the intake al cleaned up. I stilll need to clean the injectors and run the additional fuel lines. When I installed my fuel tank I chose a late model tank that had the provisions for an in-tank pump and the extra lines already in it.

I've been a little stalled on my truck for awhile, I guess its time to get back after it.

Bobby

Fuel-injection Pros: Reliability,easy starting,fuel economy,great performance over a broad rpm/power range,..no fires under the hood from a flooded carb and a back-fire..

Cons: usually requires a high pressure(35/50 psi) supply and return line from the tank to the engine, and a fuel pump capable of producing 35/50 psi, requires some electrical planning..but nothing too complicated.

Most modern fuel-injection ECU's on the market incorporate the ignition/timing/spark control,..making the install pretty straight forward.I would recommend finding a unit that would allow you to connect an OBDII connector(port) so you can use a scanner to read trouble codes or access the ECU's data list for trouble shooting, verifing inputs/outputs.

I am putting a FAST EFI system on my 1951 F1. Very nice system and easy to install.

well i was really looking into a mega-squirt system for an unrelated 300 I6 build that i probably wont do know but anyways I was pretty impressed with the mega-squirt. You can buy a kit and build it yourself (which sound like a ton of fun to me) or you can get the stuff all assembled for still pretty reasonable. the best thing is that it is completely tunable and there would be pretty much endless options for configuring it. Multi-port, Throttle body, etc, etc. All in all sounds like a neat system that i think would be really fun to play around with just to learn more about fuel injection systems. maybe ill build one for my 292 in the 59 4x4.

Wade... what engine you looking to put EFI on? I have an Explorer 5.0 upper and lower intake I'm most likely not gonna use. It's currently mounted on the 69 302 in my garage. Your welcome to come take a look at it.

If I end up with a 56 F100, I'll probably stick with a carb setup on a 460. My 72 Bronco is getting a 5.8L transplant. So, the 5.0 kit I have no use for.

Let me know...

Good for you!!

I've been trying. My spare time (is there such a thing) has been taken up with getting vehicles running for the kids, keeping the wife's truck running, keeping the kids up on schoolwork and general house repairs.

Hopefully I'll get some time for my stuff pretty soon

Bobby

Call it a whim or whatever, but this weekene i bought and installed a efi setup. Its the powerjection III. I had to run a return line and install the throttle body and that took me all of about 3 hours. Had to connect 4 wires and drill a hole for the o2 sensor. I put in a couple perameters in the lap top and it fired up the first time. Havent had alot of time to drive and tune but it was incredibly easy to install. Mamma is not that happy as tax return is gone but i think she will come around.

Congrats! Once you get the bugs tuned out, you'll never look back. I'm to the point with my stuff that it all gets EFI at some point. The F-2 is getting a stock EEC-IV system and my Falcon is getting MegaSquirted.
