Transmission Fluid

What fluid or oil should i be putting in my Transmission? It is a 96 4.0 manual 4x4. Is it just automatic tranny fluid? Mercron or Mercron V? What are options for synthetic?

Use Mercon or Mercon V. Mercon V is the better fluid, it has more good stuff in it.

Ok. I went with Mobile 1 synthetic. I have it in the transmission now. My shifting is still stiff. It feels like I have to wait all day for the syncros to catch up on 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. Is this just a ranger thing?

Isn't Mobil 1 a motor oil? Don't these transmission use transmission fluid?

My experience is the Royal Purple Syncromax works best. sounds like the damage is done already, try to be easy on the shifting to pro long the life.

there is indeed a mobil 1 a.t.f. and i have used 5w 30 motor oil in mine before with no problems. my favorite fluid for the M5OD manual trans is pennzoil syncromesh fluid. its about 7-8 bucks a qt at autozone. that all being said the proper fluid is mercon atf. just dont put 80-90 gear lube in. that will indeed ruin a trans.

What damage? I took atf out and put atf in! I was just wondering why the shifting is so slow.

Owners manual says MERCON. I was asking for something specific.

Mobile 1 ATF. Mobile 1 is a company. Not a specific type of oil.....

shifting is slow because syncros are worn.

and there is a certain way it will like to be driven. once you figure it out you'll be good to go. on mine i absolutely cannot downshift without double clutch rev matching. upshifts i sometimes do that as well, but usually when i am driving normal and taking it easy i granny shift it, but in a certain controlled manner and my shifting happens within a certain timing.
