Brake adjustment

Just finished complete brake overhaul on 51 F1. I have always adjusted brakes to where you get a little drag on drum. A freind says get a little drag then back off so ther is no drag. Which is correct? Thanks

Brake adjustment

56 Shop manual says "Rotate the adjusting screw with a suitable tool until the shoe begins to drag against the drum. Back off the adjusting screw until the drum can be turned without shoe drag."

Ditto Earl. Otherwise you will prematurely wear drum, shoes, increase fuel consumption, etc. Havent done F1 adjustment in a while, usually 6, 8 10 clicks clicks back after snug works well depending on the number of teeth on the adjuster star wheel. You are going to have to play with each wheel make sure one doesnt lock up before the other. One of the advantages of living on a gravel road, can tell real quick if not all evenly adjusted.

Just one thing to add I find it is better to crank the adjuster down until the wheel locks and then back them off. This gets the shoes centered and seated in the drums.
