The right rear brake on my 89 F250 keeps tightening up on me. I can adjust it back with the starwheel to where it functions correctly. After a few days driving it starts to grab and lock up. And after about 2 weeks it starts to drag and gets hot until I back the adjuster off again. The starwheel looks a little worn. Would this cause it it keep tightening? Are they replaceable? Thanks in advance.
Not sure what the problem is but I had a problem like that with a Ch*vy. The left rear brake wasn't working at all, causing the left to do all the braking. Going down my gravel driveway it would lock up the right tire.
All I did was clean the hardware with brake cleaner real good and eventually it freed it up.
Jack the rear completely off the ground and support with stands. Turn the motor on and put into gear to get the wheels turning. Apply the brakes. If only one tire stops turning with the brake applied, you found the problem.
Hey there mhalter and welcome to FTE! Bendix has the kit's you need to replace the items you need for a good fix. It does sound like the adjuster is causing you're grief! They are about $12.00 for each side. Talk with you guys later....
Hello, I’ve had similar problem with my GMC van rear brakes from the day one. Brakes on rear axle kept readjusting until the truck could not move. And because it was in warranty (only 1000 km) I went to the dealer. It’s long story. Visit at the dealer didn’t help. Even they changed all rear brakes. So I’ve decided to open the brakes. What I found was surprise. They install left brake shoes on right side and right brake shoes on left side. But the hardware (adjustor) was installed correctly. So I switched the brakes around and problem was gone. Try to check your shoes position and replace the adjustor.
I know it’s weird problem but nobody is perfect. Sorry for my English.
